Spyware Doctor 5

Spyware Doctor is one of the best-known spyware removal tools on the market. The program protects your system through real-time blocking, spyware scanning, and immunization against infections. The real-time scanner continuously monitors your memory and the web pages you visit. Spyware Doctor also monitors files, which try to run automatically on your system, and protects your system from security flaws. Whenever it detects a possible infection, it displays a dialog, allowing you to block the threat.

The scanner, which is built into the application, can be started anytime by the user. There are three types of scanning your computer, such as full, quick, and custom scan. However, there isn't a big difference between a full scan and a quick scan. Whenever you perform a full system scan, the hosts file is also tested. This file is used by some spyware to redirect you to their web pages.

A smart update feature is available. You can update the threat database in just a few easy steps. Updates for this kind of software are very important, because they provide protection against new threats. It's also possible to configure the program to download automatically the new updates.

The program's user interface looks nice. The best thing is that it provides easy access to all the settings and features. Of course, the program can run without any user intervention, but it's good to know that it's possible to configure the protection more thoroughly. The application's modules are displayed and configured by using the "OnGuard" page from the user interface. Besides the basic protection, Spyware Doctor has other useful features, like a key-logger guard, a network guard, a popup blocker, a scheduler, and much more.

Pluses: You can modify the program settings to allow certain domains that you know are trusted. When you connect to these domains, the program won't scan for malware.

Drawbacks / flaws:

In conclusion: Overall, I think Spyware Doctor offers good protection for your computer. I was satisfied with this application.

Description

This is one of the many reasons why the award-winning Spyware Doctor has been chosen by millions of users to protect their PCs against spyware, adware, trojans, keyloggers, spybots and other tracking threats.

10-Strike Network File Search

10-Strike Network File Search' it's a search engine, which allows you to search files on network computers. It uses the NetBios protocol. You can only find shared files. You can search either after a search phrase or after a file mask. The program can generate and save handy reports of the search. After the search is finished, you can see the file's properties, download, preview or open it. In addition, you can open the folder where it is located or simply download it to your computer or to any other computer on the network if you have enough permission.

While I've tested the program, I was impressed by the speed of the searching process. If you want to search only on a few computers from the network, you can specify this in the 'Computer Filter' menu by selecting the specific computers. You can also specify the computers from the list, which will not be included in the search. Another interesting feature is that you can select the size of the file. You can chose to be less or greater than a selected value. You can even select the dates between which the file should have been created.

The interface is very intuitive and easy to use.

Pluses: It works faster than Windows search engine.

Description

Search files on local network's servers and computers. Search files on FTP servers. Preview search results and open found files directly from the remote computers or copy them to your hard drive. Generate and save handy reports. If you are a system administrator, you can find all video or MP3 files that your users are hiding on servers. Search in hidden resources. Delete the necessary files from servers.

System Requirements
Network (NetBios, TCP port #139, ICMP should be enabled in the firewall)

What's new
Added exporting data to CSV and XML formats. Added displaying computer names instead of IP addresses in reports.

WinRAR 3.80

WinRAR archiver is a powerful tool which allows you to create, manage, and control archive files.

It supports RAR and ZIP 2.0 archives, special algorithms optimized for text, audio, graphics, 32-bit and 64-bit Intel executables compression. You can now handle archives directly from Windows Explorer due to the shell integration including drag-and-drop facility and cascaded context menus. WinRAR features wizards for beginners and command line interface for advanced users. It can handle non RAR archives (7-Zip, ACE, ARJ, BZ2, CAB, GZ, ISO, JAR, LZH, TAR, UUE, Z, GZip) management, solid archiving which can raise compression ratio by 10% - 50% over more common methods, particularly when packing a large number of small, similar files.

Using WinRAR you can create multivolume archives, self-extracting archives (also multivolume) using the default or optional SFX modules. You can use a lot of service functions, such as encryption, archive comments, error logging, etc. The program has an inbuilt viewer for viewing the content of text files within archives. You can create compression profiles in order to optimize your activity.

It has a very friendly user interface, so that the menus are customizable and offer access to important archive commands like extract, test, comment, protect, and lock, but also other important tools such as scan, convert, or benchmark and hardware test.

Pluses: There are several versions of RAR, for a number of operating environments: Windows, Linux, FreeBSD, DOS, OS/2, MacOS X. You can test, lock and repair/recover physically damaged archives or volumes allowing to reconstruct missing parts of multivolume archives. You can also take advantage of miscellaneous options such as Background archiving, turn PC off when done, compression estimation.

Among the new features we may mention: new buttons (options) such as: "Define volume sizes...", "Rename automatically", "Multithreading" option added to "Benchmark and hardware test" command, new command lines, increased compression speed (5 -15%) for some data types. The publisher states that they fixed some bugs in the multithreaded text compression algorithm.

The speed versus the rate of compression came out as medium compared to WinAce and WinZip: a directory containing multimedia and text files in total size of 104 Mb compressed at a normal rate by WinRAR resulted in a 64 Mb in 51 seconds compared to 76,2 Mb in 17 seconds for WinZip and 64,2 Mb in 1 minute and 11 seconds for WinAce.

Drawbacks / flaws:

In conclusion: A good compression over a quite short archiving time sets WinRAR in a very good position among the well known archivers. The program is a very good and reliable archiving solution.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a surprisingly effective freeware antimalware tool. It's a relatively speedy malware remover, with the quick scan mode taking about 10 minutes. The heuristics engine proved on multiple computers during empirical testing that it was capable of determining the difference between false positives and dangerous apps.

The app has some nice features rolled in, too. It supports multiple drive scanning, context menu options including a scan-on-demand for individual files, and the FileAssassin option under the More Tools section for removing locked files. The interface is simple, but pleasant-looking and well-organized. Tabs live just below the oversized logo, with few options per tab to keep the clutter to a minimum. The installation process was fast enough, but interestingly offered up the well-kept change log and an instant definition file update. You can pay for an upgrade to some snazzier features, but the free version is a worthwhile, responsive malware remover.

Avira AntiVir Personal Free Antivirus does double duty, protecting against spyware and viruses alike. For users who want backups or want to have their antivirus and antispyware separate, we've recommended alternatives, but the trend is to find the two formerly separate features rolled into one program. AntiVir's scans are flexible, allowing the user to check all hard drives, choose a preloaded scan--for rootkits, for example--or customize. After testing on several machines, no viruses turned up, although several malicious hidden files did rear their heads. The heuristic scan can be turned on or off completely or partially, with three different intensity levels.

The quarantine offers extensive support, too, although the definition file updater can be sluggish. Still, combining effective antimalware and antivirus tools into one is a freeware luxury, and AntiVir has been rated one of the most effective defense tools by third-party testers.

Comodo Firewall Pro has eradicated most of its resource-hogging ways and gives users what they want: a flexible yet simple firewall that's great for beginners but also provides a smorgasbord of information and plenty of options for advanced users.

From the category tabs of Summary, Firewall, Defense +, and Miscellaneous to more specific headings, most security terms come linked to relevant security issues so users can drill down to learn more about how the firewall is performing. Although the app rears its head often when you first fire it up, once it learns your behavior, it becomes virtually unnoticeable.
